 Renaissance: Humanism and Art
I have changed the assignment slightly from what was explained in class. So read carefully!

OVERVIEW: Use your class notes about the FEATURES of HUMANISM to describe TWO works of art from the Renaissance. There is also an explanation of Humanism in your textbook in Chapter one, section one).   Include a SMALL (1/4 page or less) copy of the pieces of art you chose.

1. a. Choose two of the following Renaissance artists and ONE work of art each.
--> DO use two pieces of art that are not too similar -for example, please don't use two Madonnas, unless they are STRIKINGLY different from each other, either in composition or background.

ARTISTS: (Fra) Angelico, Boticelli, Ghirlandio, Masaccio, Michelangelo, Veronese, (Leonardo da) Vinci    Click on "The Art Website" to find their works of art.

When you make your choices, keep in mind the features of Humanism and choose works that BEST SHOW most, if not all, the ways that Humanism influenced art.

2. List and describe the characteristics (or elements) of HUMANISM. (Use your notes and/or other reference material.)

3. For each artist, write a SHORT bio - who, where and when he was born, where he painted/sculpted (the work you chose). Summarize any information you read about how his art may have been affected by the new philosophy of humanism, mathematics, and/or other scientific advances.  BE SURE TO PARAPHRASE (use your own workds) your source, and be sure to CITE your source (say where your information came from.)

  4. a. For each piece of art, Insert a copy of the artwork on  the page. It should be about 2" high.

 b. Describe accurately and carefully how elements of the artwork demonstrate  Characteristics of Humanism.   Your response will include   1. a description (of the portion(s) of the painting) and 2. analysis - how the part(s) you described demonstrate Humanism.
