Journals.

Various historical associations publish "journals," or collections of bits of new historical writings ("articles.")  Some associations have been publishing journals since the 1870s. These articles are not published unless and until the editors (other historians) have verified the integrity of the historian's writing. The sources are checked for viability and the analysis for reasonableness. The information found in these various journal articles is sure to have been impeccably researched.

Lucky for us, we are very near the FABULOUS J. Paul Leonard Library at San Francisco State University.

The "Periodicals" stacks (and microfiche records) are on the Second Floor.

The Guide to Periodical Publications (I'm not sure of the exact title) is in the Reference Section on the First Floor. The Research librarians are also located there, although there are other "experts" on the Second Floor that may offer better help to the Journals.

Here are the publications that are available at SFSU. You will need to ask a librarian about how to search for the subject that you are interested in.

American Heritage (yes, the magazine -- slightly less "guaranteed integrity" than the journals, but generally informative.)

American Historical Review - published by the American Historical Association

   Journal of American History -

William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine

   Mississippi Valley Historical Review

And Here's a Useful Set of Books: Perspectives in American History; the call number for one of them is E171. P47 -- once  you find this one, the others will be shelved with it.

IMPORTANT RESOURCE: THE LIBRARY HOME PAGE. Here you will find hours of operation and a MAP of all the floors and where you can find the books by call number.
