Due MONDAY:   Triangle, the Fire That Changed America:  your written response:
* What is the THESIS of the book? (In other words, what is the author's point in writing the book?) 
* * What complaints did the workers have about their conditions of employment?
* * In what ways was a job at the shirt waist factory a "good job"?  In what ways was it not a good place to work (aside from dying in a fire)?
* * What complaints did the owners of the company have about the workers (may be implicit).
* * How did reformers get changes made to avoid future tragedies of this sort?

 * * For each of the double-starred items, use examples from the book and include page number citations (parenthetical).

Due WEDNESDAY: Reading assignments (Quiz) 
 READ the textbook for this chapter; there is too much rich romance and tragedy in this "Era of the West" for you to depend solely on AMSCO for your understanding.

**PICK ONE of the following  topics to do research; bring a GRAPHIC and an "Interesting One Minute" report about [your topic] in California (if at all possible):
Native Americans, Chinese, Irish, Mexicans,The Railroad, Mining, Natural Environmentalism

Use the Template you received in class to take reading notes on this chapter. (Don't forget to just READ the introduction and the summary at the end of the chapter. Most people find it useful to read the summary before launching into the chapter.
    LABOR is a major theme - Be sure to understand the Labor Movement. Write your responses to Reading American Pictures  "The Killing Floor" section: Analyzing the Evidence.
    What  are the arguments  about Working Women? -- Opinions of married women? Single women? (pp 534-5)

(If you do not have a template, use the standard Cornell notes process.)

For Monday: Continue working on the issue of Labor. (Chapters 18 & 19)
REVIEW: Triangle: The Fire that Changed America. Review your responses to the questions for January 4th.
Respond in writing (bring to class) Remember to provide SHI in your responses.
 1. To what extent were labor (trade) unions and city life related to each other? 
 2.  What factors made the AFL successful? To what extent was the leadership of Gompers relevant to its success?
 3.  How was the AFL different from industrial unions, such as that led by Eugene V. Debs?
 4. Explain the differences and similarities between socialism, as espoused by Debs, and the so-called "Western Radicalism" among miners in the west, and Big Bill Heywood's IWW.
