Chapter 11: Getting on with Business;
Sections 3 and 4 Due MONDAY: Prosperity 1. How would you explain the huge popularity of Bruce Barton's book, The Man Nobody Knows? 1a. What part did propaganda play in develping "the respect Americans had for Big Business"(as the textbook claims)? Use your knowledge of the ways propaganda (and advertising) work and the information in the textbook to respond to this question. 2. Why was the A&P able to expand to be a giant food store company? (Today's world: what companies have expanded to a similarly huge presence?) 2a. Do Americans today have a "respect for Big Business"? Give reasons for your response. (Hint: use the kinds of evidence and examples that the textbook used about the 1920s to guide your thinking about today's mainstream viewpoint(s). 3. Describe what the labor unions wanted and the difficulties they faced in the 1920s. 3a. ** Would you have supported the position of labor unions if you had been present during the 1920s? Chapter 12: A Prospering Society Section 3: CULTURE CLASH! Assignment due Tuesday by 8AM: From the film that you saw in class and/or chapters 11 and 12 (including Section 3), make a list of three topics you would most like to explore for your research paper. (Be sure to read Section 3 of Ch 12 before you make your final cut!) These items must be posted to turnitin.com before 8AM, Tuesday. ADDITIONAL HOMEWORK: Due Tuesday in class: Read Section 3. Respond to the following questions in writing and bring to class: 1. The textbook makes the claim that "the Klu Klux Klan's popularity decline[d]" (p403). What evidence is in the textbook to support this claim? 2. By the mid-twenties, the Klan had expanded its circle of hatred to include others in addition to African Americans. Describe this expanded circle; why were different groups targeted geographically? 3. What reasons might there have been for the Klan to be so popular in places like Indiana? (you may want to look at a map of the US to see if there are clues about "why Indiana?") 4. The KKK still exists today. What are its stated goals? Why was Prohibition (the 18th Amendment) enacted? Why did it fail? What conclusions can you draw from this episode in US History? |
